Biography

From Makasi’s beginnings in underground clubs in Antwerp and Amsterdam, to Tommorowland, Tomorrowworld, Ultra, Miami Music Week, Sunburn, It’s The Ship, Balaton Sound, and beyond, the Belgian DJ/producer has since shared the stage with heroes like Diplo, Martin Garrix, N.e.r.d, 50 Cent, Will.i.am, and many more. Behind the decks he cuts an infectious, energetic figure, his peaktime sets feature short mixes and bespoke mash-up edits that quickly cuts up house, EDM, moombahton, and bass music into one heady, genre defying party mix. Other times and depending on the setting, he drops the tempo and explores deep and afro house. He neatly explains it thus: “I don’t feel like I fit a particular music scene, I’ve always been a chameleon that can blend in anywhere”.

A versatile DJ (he had his first set of turntables aged 11 years old and played his first club set at 15) Makasi is at home playing a big sound on festival stages as he is in the club with an Afrohouse/deep inspired sound with influences of Black Coffee, Francis Mercier, Caiiro, Sun El Musician, Moblack and Sondela. He comes complete with the same energy and passion for crossing genres, and the focus is always on the audience and performance.

To this mainstage soundtrack, Makasi has added his own global take, beginning with festival anthems King of Kings and Dance with Me, signed to the likes of Smash The House, the imprint of good friends Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and Netsky, Charlotte De Witte and Lost Frequencies. Inspired by the music of West African and Latin artists played at home during his childhood, Makasi has spent the last year building a body of work that will form the backbone of his forthcoming new label, Supah Recordings, an imprint that will feature both his own music and other artists he discovers on his travels.

A traveller by heart, Makasi has lived in New York, LA, and Bangkok. Returning to Belgium in the 2010’s he became a rising star of Europe’s scene, his name having spread beyond Benelux to Paris, Barcelona, Ibiza, Milan, and then the rest of the world – Mexico, Dubai, China, South Korea, India, and Thailand. Clubs became his playground and then came fashion week parties in NYC, Milan, and Moscow.

In 2024, Makasi returns to Thailand to be part of Bangkok’s biggest new club, full details will be announced soon. This allows him to focus on a global DJ diary, as well as his shows in Belgium and Europe. Released late November, Makasi and Richie Loop’s new collaboration, ‘Dumski’, is a Tribal House anthem in the making, currently featuring on multiple playlists and tipped by the likes of EDM.com and DJ City. With more new music ready and a label primed to launch, the next stage of Makasi’s career is set for lift off.
